At the tender age of seventeen years old, Joy Crookes is very much the new songwriter on the block. You would never in a million years guess her age though, judging by the mature sounds heard on her new single ‘New Manhattan’ which sees deep and sorrowful vocals emote over the top of foreboding strings. With a rich texture to her vocals, as if she’s been through a life time of heart break, she could well be the British version of Lana Del Rey with her sultry and slightly dangerous air. The orchestral drama in the songwriting ensures that cinematic climaxes are reached again and again. Surely here is a new contender for a future Bond theme tune. - SJ
